I am noticing though this discussion a disconnect in the understood meaning=
 of "hiss."

Peter mentioned on his Soundcloud example, the hiss he was concerned with w=
as mostly below 5kHz. To my own ears the problematic microphone hiss noise =
in that recording was most prominent from 8 to 10 kHz.

Even if it is clear that hiss refers to the "s" sound as heard in the word =
"hiss", that sound may fall into different frequency ranges  depending on t=
he frequency response of hearing of the individual listener.  For this reas=
on, when discussing specific cases it may be helpful to describe important =
frequencies or frequency ranges using frequency numbers rather than only su=
bjective terms like "hiss" or "high frequency."

My method of identifying the range of problematic noise in a recording ofte=
n involves a combination of looking at the recording as a spectrogram, and =
listening while sweeping through frequency ranges using a parametric equali=
zer.
