David, I have also used a tee-pee made of reticulated foam (1/2" thick, 80 cells/square inch) that would slip over my tripod. The microphones would b= e enclosed by hanging below (instead of mounted above) the union point and staked to the ground. This had the advantage of a tent without needing to pack along the extra poles. This gave exceptional space and the best results however it was still sizable and unless I was recording close to my vehicle (rarely) I would not use it often.
