Peter,
It has to be directional to be stereo. :-) I haven't done precise
measurements but the overall pattern is similar to a mono cardioid
at bird frequencies. Full left and right is around 60 deg or
thereabouts after which the sensitivity falls off. Peak response from
each mic is 45 deg vertically and horizontally. Currently I have it
mounted in a tent to make it waterproof and that also reduces the rear
response.
The peanut shaking test is on
www.stowford.org/recordings.htm#stereotest
and stereo-test-rig2 was walking in a straight line 3 metres past the
mic. I should do a 360 degree test but at the moment it is on a steep
overgrown slope.
The fall-off with distance on Dawn Test Rig 2 is much more rapid than
with the MKH416 pair Dawn Test Rig 1 as you would expect, but the
stereo image is more even. The Sennheiser image is better at 50 deg
rather than 60. The garden of trees and shrubs it was looking at is
about 10 metres to 30 metres away at which point the Sennheisers win
hands down. A pic of the setup with the tent looking right in on
www.stowford.org/recordings.htm#pheasantpass
As mounted, the max gain from the box at
45 deg laterally and vertically is about 12dB.
