<<I would like to get an idea how people are using digital S/PIF, AES,
and TOSLINK inputs and outputs, for recording/playback/editing. I am
working on a new project design and am trying to figure out what bit
rates people use. Personally, I only use 48KHz/24bit for recording.
What bit rates are you using, 44.1Khz, 48KHz, 96KHz, 192KHz, or
something else? Would it be horrible not to allow the use of 44.1KHz
field audio recording?>>

In my work SPDIF, AES/EBU and/or LightPipe transfers only come into
play when utilizing multiple interfaces on multitrack music sessions.
Bit rate is determined by the eventual distribution medium. 48k is
only used when the end product is film or video. 44.1k is used for
everything else, which invariably is intended as an audio CD. Higher
bit rates are occasionally seen on projects coming in from other
studios. Personally I find the higher rates provide the merest of
infinitesimal audible improvements (if any at all) in exchange for a
doubling of the amount of data which must be processed.
