So sorry to hear about this, James. There could be many causes, but I
lost several hours of good material a few years back when the AA
battery in my Hi-MD recorder died in the cold and there was not enough
power left to correctly update the disk directory. This turns out to
be a fatal flaw in some later Hi-MD models, such as the MZ-M10 and MZ-
M100, that I was able to recreate again and again at room temperature.
(Earlier Hi-MD models, such as the MZ-NHF700 and MZ-NHF800 seem to be
more reliable in this regard, reserving enough battery power at the
end to update the disk directory before they shut down.)
I was never able to recover the lost data, but I didn't go to the
extent of sending it in to Sony as Rob suggests. Hopefully you can get
some help that way. Meanwhile, for future recordings, I'd recommend
migrating to one of the newer digital recorders like Olympus LS-10 or
Sony PCM-M10 if you can.
