Most (maybe all) recorders with a 3.5mm (1/8") mic input will provide PIP
voltage. Your mic input on your PC provides it also. The big question is
at what voltage and how much current can it provide. Not all recorders
provide adequate power for some mics.

What kind of recorder do you plan to use it with?

My experience is that to be sure to adequately power a pair of EM172 or
EM158 it's best to use a battery box. Here's a simple schematic that
illustrates the basic battery box circuit.

I have had some many people asking about battery boxes I plan to provide one
soon.

Thanks,

Gene

Re: http://www.frogloggers.com/BT%20EM172.htm

How do you know if a recorder is PIP compatible and if it's not, how do you
power them?

It lists nominal voltage at 5v, obviously not phantom power level. Is there
a company that provides the appropriate power supply or battery box for
inline use or (I shudder at the thought) a plan to DIY a power supply of
sorts?
