Myles,
If you can let is know which models of recorder and mixer you have that wou=
ld be helpful in giving you some more precise advice.
Based on what you have said I think you might have a hook up issue. The Y-=
loop to one xlr is very likely to be incorrect. You need to be running the=
mid/416 into channel one and the emesser in to channel 2, so you need to h=
ave both mics on their own cable. You'll also need a breakout cable to hook=
up the mixer to the Fostex. Depending on which recorder you have you'll ne=
ed a different connector at the recorder end. The FR2LE has unbalanced line=
in on 6mm jacks.
With the M/S you can either dematrix to L/R in the mixer, or record the M/S=
and dematrix on your computer as has been suggested. If you want to demat=
rix on the mixer you need to switch the Gang1-2 switch to MAT. If you want =
to record the undecoded M/S but need to hear what the L/R sounds like you c=
an monitor decoded M/S by selecting "M/S" on the Phones switch.

For setting up the mixer and recorder you need to use the Mixers lineup ton=
e.

The idea here is that you set the recorder input levels so that you can ign=
ore the recorder and rely on the mixer meters only. What you need to do is=
hook the recorder up, then engage the line-up tone on your mixer. SQN sugg=
est that you set the recorder levels so that the line up tone registers at =
-12dB on the recorder meters. You might need to set this higher for nature =
recording purposes but it should be a reasonable place to start.
cheers
