Thanks to those who responded immediately!  As a guy who is firmly into
the middle-aged demographic now, I can lament the time when we used to
go to audio stores with real listening rooms to compare average-cost
audio equipment.  It seems that now, if one can listen at all, he is
listening to equipment from the isles of a warehouse unless you move
into fairly high-end equipment.  But I don't live in a town with any of
those stores anyway.  So I really appreciate these responses.  Any other
ideas?

Aaron, I've considered both of these.  Thanks for making the
comparison!  I'm trying to stay in that couple-hundred-dollar price
range, but the RP5s might be close enough.  Just to be sure:  Are you
comparing these to the Alesis M1 Active 520?  There's a little M1 320 as
well.
