Welcome Ellen!

Since you say you're often very close to your subject, and rails are pretty
noisy critters, here's an unconventional recommendation for a recording rig.
Don't use an external microphone, use a recorder with good internal mics, and
place the recorder close to your subject.

Buy a Sony PCM-M10 recorder ($275) and a Rode Dead Kitten wind muff ($25) to
cover the built-in mics. Mount the recorder on the end of a tripod or mic
stand ($25 - $50). Move in close to your subject, place the recorder and
stand, and back away a few feet.

The M10 includes a wired remote control so you can start and stop the recording
from a distance. Monitor the action through headphones, starting and stopping
the recording as needed with the remote. The remote also can place markers at
points of interest as your record, too.

The PCM- M10 is similar in quality to the Edirol R-09HR you mentioned. The
R-09HR remote is infrared, and won't work with the wind muff in place. The
Zoom H2 recorder also offers good quality with its built in mics, but doesn't
have a remote control unit.

Here's a web page that compares the internal mics of several popular recorders.
