David and All,
Thanks for reminding us of Walt's web site.  At the bottom of the page
you referred to is a link to some of his recordings.  There he has a
nice comparison of the same SASS mic setup with MKH20s on tripods at 4
feet and 17 feet high.  It's hard to say exactly but the 17 foot high
tripod recording seems more real, even the background hiss seems to
have more depth and life, I'm guessing because it is filled in with
greater reverb from the more distant ground.  The comparison between
the SASS 20s and the MS 30/40 seems like the SASS has more width, the
MS brings the sounds in front up more in your face.
