Hi Dean
The RH-1 you are familiar with is probably the most popular model
because it retains the manual gain setting with shut-off. All of them
have tiny buttons, complex menus and are prone to disc errors (mostly
due to powering problems). There are ways to work-around most of the
design shortfalls but not without concerted effort. See
http://www.uwm.edu/~type/116/Hi-MD-Handbook/06116-HiMD-Hndbk.htm The
pictured NH-700 has an old fashion "rotary" knob for record level.
All of the Hi-MD models have the same, low noise pre performance. You
can find a features list for all of the Hi-MD units here:
http://www.minidisc.org/part_Hi-MD_Sony.html

I think the LS-10 comes in right at your budget maximum. Yes, there
will be a little more noise when you turn the gain full or nearly
full, but maybe this isn't a frequent need with the ME-67 mic's high
output. Recordists who have used Hi-MD's extensively praise the
LS-10's ruggedness and ease of use. Rob D.
