Thanks for a very informative post. At the lower end of the price range I'v=
e experimented with capturing ambience in the Borders of Scotland and North=
umberland using a variety of set ups. Two stereo pairs in different locatio=
ns can give (obviously) a 4 channel rendition or a 5.1 mix if one of the pa=
irs is a mid-side (L, R and C) and the other a pair of omnis (RL and RR), o=
r a good stereo mix with some attention to the layering and crossfades.

Currently I'm favouring a 2.1 set-up with a Rode NTG3 shotgun in the centre=
 and the omnis (AT3032s) for space and depth, though this probably wouldn't=
 satisfy the requirements of the professional nature recordist and it might=
 be that the various Sennheiser mid/side combinations do a much better job =
with less bulk.
