Hi Jason
After I told you I looked them up myself on the net. I am in Japan, and as it
turned out all the links were Japanese so, I'm not sure of the availability in
Canada. I was lucky to find some second hand which saved me a lot. Second hand
gear here in Japan is uually excellant condition.
I thought I would mention my earphones too as they might be of interest for
people travelling lightweight in the field. Greg recommended me the
Audio Technica ATH-M50 for monitoring headphones (always very grateful for your
advice Greg!). I have no doubt these are excellant. I would love to have bought
them. Unfortunately I could not afford to buy 2 pairs, and I need a pair for
listening to recordings on the (noisy) train, where carrying those would be
impractical. And I wanted also something more compact for my lightweight setup
(Marantz PMD 620 + DPA 4060s). So I chose "in ear monitors". I know they may
not be as good as the ATH-M50 headphones, but, they are extremely handy for
travelling about with. And I am very happy with their performance. They are
made by "Etymotic Research". This company also makes earplugs. And they block
out the noise extremely well - "Their external noise exclusion -- 35 dB with
3-flange eartips, 42 dB with foam eartips". And they are supposed to be very
accurate soundwise.
Their range of interest is the ER4 range. They have ER4B (b=binaural) "to
provide an eardrum-pressure frequency response closely mimicking that of the
open ear in a diffuse sound field, making them ideal for any material that has
not been equalized for loudspeaker playback, such as properly equalized
binaural recordings."
Then they have ER4S (s=stereo) "designed to compensate for the high frequency
emphasis in all CD recordings, in order to provide accurate sound
reproduction." And they have ER4P (p=portable) for low powered devices such as
portable mp3 players.
Here's their page:
