You've given no indication of your budget, so perhaps the following is out =
of your price range. Nonetheless, as an open-ended recommendation I suggest=
a pair of Dynaudio BM5As:

(Don't confuse them with the BM5A Compact, which are not much good IMHO.)
I have a pair of these that live permanently in Kathmandu. They were the be=
st small and affordable speakers I was able to find a couple of years ago. =
I like them very much, and they were cheap enough to leave in Kathmandu whe=
n I'm not there - it won't be a *major* disaster if something happens to th=
em.
I have recorded, edited, mixed and mastered whole albums on those monitors,=
in conjunction with a pair of good headphones, and they have been released=
with no surprises when played on different audio systems. That's a good si=
gn, IMHO.
Editing itself has a couple of interpretations. I find that speakers are go=
od for relaxed editing within files to extract interesting parts, and for e=
diting between files (crossfading, etc.) to make collages or similar. But f=
or precise editing tasks I use a pair of AudioTechnica ANC7 active noise ca=
nceling headphones. They remove the background hum and rumble of the outsid=
e world, preventing me from cutting the start or end of a file prematurely.=
The noise canceling circuitry adds a bit of hiss, but it is definitely the=
lesser of two evils.
