Hi Travis ---
As you can probably guess, what you'll need depends on what about the sounds
you want to compare. And is your explanatory variable (urban vs. rural) simply
those to categories or will you be making some measurements of the location as
well as of the bird songs?

Straight forward urban vs. rural compare the frequencies of songs type study
could be done with a parabola and 1 microphone.

If you want to try to make detailed measurements of the songs and especially
to better understand the sonic environment you'll probably want multiple tracks
and some way to calibrate the system.

Can you give some more info about what your goals are --- meaning what
specifically you're interested in about the bird songs and what variables about
the environment you think might be important?
