You can hear a quick test I did comparing the 2 methods...

I know I didn't use a test tone or an anechoic chamber so don't get on me f=
or being unscientific...I was just doing a quick A-B to hear the basic diff=
erences.  I roughly balanced the two parts using the voice level.

There's more than thing going on, the overall sounds are quite different re=
gardless of hiss or no hiss.  But I believe you will notice more hiss in th=
e first part, using the aforementioned cable that converts 48v to PIP.  So,=
 for our purposes, it's not as great as one would have hoped.  Or perhaps w=
the other way to look at it is..that the small SP preamp is quite good at h=
andling the WL 183 mics.
