To go with John's explanation, have a look at this picture:

The gold dot on the microphone barrel, just visible above the middle cable
tie, indicates the axis of the transducer. It took me a while to figure thi=
s
out when first looking at setups using this mic - further complicated by th=
e
fact that some people have actually modded their NT1-As into a front-addres=
s
mic before building them into an array!
