Hi Klas--
Wish I could respond to your proposition
thoroughly. The UA-25EX manual I could access
from Edirol is skimpy on the specs and operation.
I seem to recall that some folks have been using
the Tascam US-122 in "stand-alone" mode as you
pose and powering it with a battery pack plugged
into the USB connector. There are several, low
cost, ~ .3 amp portable power supplies out there
made for iPods that should work assuming it will
operate without a computer. Taperssection.com
might produce relevant discussion but there's
only general speculation about the unit at
present.
Good that you like the UA-25EX 's sound quality.
Does the UA-25EX have a lot of record gain? The
US-122 and computer interfaces I've looked into
had 40-45 dB gain. I use 60 dB gain as my
personal "minimum requirement" for ambience
recording.
Any very low-noise pre with phantom power under
$300 is always interesting- especially
field-worthy. For folks designing a low-hassle
field system, it seems like the UA-25EX would
have to be very quiet to justify ~$250USD
addition to a recorder with the (~$600USD) Fostex
FR2-LE as an one-unit option. Rob D.
