In addition to the problems mentioned here already, I believe there
were some problems with accelerated deterioration of the fabric under
certain atmospheric conditions - not something they could've foreseen
in the design stage. A new product would probably require a complete re-
think.
I'd like to find out what fabric they were using, I guess it's some
kind of hi-tech stuff from Schoeller or similar. You could place your
hand inside the Windpac and blow from the outside and not feel any wind
coming in. But if you placed your hand outside the Windpac and blew
inside it, you could feel the wind coming out. Interesting directional
weave, probably designed for lightweight outdoor clothing...
I wrote a brief magazine review of it some time ago, and compared it
against a Rycote by strapping myself into the back seat of a sporty
little sedan and holding both units through the sunroof while cruising
down a freeway, gradually increasing speed to see how they handled the
wind velocity. We got up to 60km/h, at which point my wrists collapsed!
In that test, the Windpac offered better wind rejection than the plain
unassisted (i.e. no dead cat) Rycote, and better HF response. But
beyond (or should I say 'below'?) the HF response, each had a different
effect on the overall frequency spectrum, and it would be hard to say
if one was preferable to the other. Either one would solve the majority
of wind problems a nature recordist is likely to face...
