I personally find it's just way too noisy when hand-holding. Hard to
explain until you use one. There is no pistol grip, just a small ring.
It could be rigged with a handle of some kind, but without it, there
seems to be a lot of noise transmitted through the cable and such.
Not sure you can use it without their suspension, again, to handle it
you'd see why, the suspension fits inside in a very custom and tight
way, can't see how you could easily use the shield part without the
suspension. I LIKE the suspension though, it's well thought out and
very versatile. And if you're mounting the Windpac on a tripod or mic
stand, it works well, or even on a tripod. For the week I was
recording geysers in Yellowstone, I rigged up the windpac to a 15'
carbon fiber boompole, and taped all the cables, since I didn't have
to constantly break it down. There, it's light weight was a real
asset, out on the end of a 15 foot pole.
So not to talk you out of it. But for fast 'grab and go', I think the
Rycote style kit suits me better.
