If they work for you, you might consider earphones; I love my Etymotic
ER4's -- they are very very accurate and provide a high degree of
isolation. They fit in your ear canal (they're not earbuds), I use the
included rubber tips but you can get custom-fitted tips molded to your
specific ear canals at significant expense.
The advantages (other than being the most accurate revealing 'phones
I've used) for the field recordist are their extremely small size --
they're no heavier and a bit smaller than iPod earbuds... :)
There are several vendors on eBay now offering the premium ER4s for
well under $200 I believe(!), the ER6s are also quite good but are a
step down... but I think now go for < $100. :)
