FAT32 stores a copy of the MBR at a well-known location, so an easy
recovery is simple enough. Why Windows wasn't using the copy is
strange, but as we all know "Microsoft works in mysterious ways".
You may wish to reconsider the use of FAT32 though. FAT32 is beyond
being simply long in the tooth, particularly in the file size limit.
NTFS is a better choice for maximum file size, recoverability and
overall robustness:
