Alternative to cutting the cables, there is also the method of making
an adapter cable that connects to the existing connectors on the
wl-183s.  This was described in an earlier diagram of Rob's, and I
think it is still up somewhere on his site.  You may save some money
by wiring directly, but I like the adapter cable method.  The one I
made has ten feet of cable for each mic which allows for getting them
high in a tree, or far enough away to not record a minidisc's
mechanical noise or my own breath.  Also the longer cables allow for
creative spacing up to twenty feet.

Either way it's fairly basic if you know how to solder.
