Best of luck with your H2 when you get it Roger.
The NT4 runs on 12~48 phantom or on its own power via a 9 volt
battery, which is required when plugging into recorders that don't
supply phantom power and only have stereo mini-plug input. This is
the case for the H2. I've had no problems using the NT4 and the 9
volt with the DAT, minidisc etc. Other than a little on the noisy
side, it works just fine.
But when plugged into the H2 ext. mic jack, even with the mic gain
set to "H" the level is so low, almost nothing is recorded. If you
increase the rec level to 127 (the H2's max) to compensate, you get
so much noise, the recording is totally unusable.
Using the Mixpre as the preamp and going straight to the H2's line
input was the only way to get a good (very good) recording with the
NT4.
This may just be a NT4/H2 thing although I've read on other forums
people having similar problems with the H2 ext. and certain mics. You
may need a mic with a high(er) output.
The H2's internal mics don't have this problem at all. It's a strange
one.

inputs? Your NT4 needs 12-48 phantom so maybe the plug-in power isn't
up to it?
