The Tapers Section forums have lots of information about
ways to power recording gear with external batteries.
Here's one solution that works for the R-4.
Edirol R-4 requires a 9V to 12V DC external power source.
The Initial RB-270 battery (9V, 5400 mAh) powers the R-4
for about 8 hours. One source is B&H Photo Video, $40.

The cable that comes with the RB-270 battery will accept the
Radio Shack "M" adaptaplug ($5) for the connection to the R-4.

Be sure to connect the plug so that the Tip is '-' and
Ring is '+' for use with the R-4. This is the reverse of
most recording gear today.
