Hi James--
Can't say from experience. One study I recall reading stated a 
minimum of about 1" of dead air on all sides. All commercial mounts 
provide more than this. The NT1-A's capsule is recessed about 7/8" in 
the center but only about 1/4" on the sides. You can always make a 
compact one and do a comparison. Rob D.
