The idea seems to be you need about 1/2" of still air around the capsule. It doesn't have to be open air - Rycote make a range of furry windgags which are designed to go over the mic manufacturer's foam 'windshield' which is usually only about 1/2" thick. There are a great improvement on just the foam, but don't work that well without the foam to give the dead air space. |
