All Hi-MD models around $200:

RH-10

Hopefully some are still in stock. These first generation models are
PC transfer only.

Here's the Zoom H4 recorder compared to Hi-MD:

Your starter mics probably won't be able to take advantage of Hi-MD
quality, but you'll be able to confidently move up to much better
mics in the future. Worse case: you sell your Hi-MD on eBay with
little value loss. With a mp3 recorder, you might easily find
yourself starting over from scratch if you do catch the bug. Rob D.
