You can control a MD if you are prepared to butcher a remote control to 
get the strange plug. You use a transistor to ground the remote control 
line via resistor (330R). I used a cheap alarm clock module and a 4538 
CMOS monostable to turn the beeper output from the clock into a 0.5s 
pulse as if you were pressing the pause button.

Trouble is you normally still have to aim the mic at the bird which 
made that project not particularly useful as a way to get a lie-in ;)
