The bands that Rycote uses are just standard silicon o-rings in specific
sizes. They charge the earth for them, but regular o-ring suppliers do not.
My biggest gripe about the Rycote support rings in the current modular
system is all the fiddly parts in that system. Definitely don't get into
adjusting it in the field or you will loose something.
In terms or DIY on those support rings, the Sennheiser rings are easier
to duplicate. Or at least they are in my system where I use a milling
machine and a rotary table for them. I've experimented a bit on milling
the equivalent of the Sennheiser supports, though I've not built a whole
DIY setup yet. One of these days I should.
The hardest part to DIY is the zeppelin, though if you go back to the
original way it was made it may not be so bad. Originally the main mesh
was made by painting cotton mesh with synthetic paint. I have such a
Rycote zeppelin here. The cotton mesh used can be found in craft shops
where it's used for latchhook rugs. When wet it's fairly easily molded
to shape.
I've been saying for years that it's high time the these expensive
systems had reasonably priced competition. Nice to see another entry.
