Many current digital recorders have much more noticeable background hiss than a good cassette recorder, when used with dynamic mikes. But in general I would support others' recommendation to move on from analog cassette to a newer format. To my ears, one of the big reasons to switch was the speed fluctuations called wow and flutter in the analog cassette recording. This lack of time base stability changed the character of the sound being recorded. We learned to tolerate it when we had no choice, but once we could hear recordings without wow and flutter there was no going back. AOL now offers free email to everyone.
