Thanks to all for the tips and help. Looks like I am stuck for the moment. =
I have fitted the back-up recorder with a right angled plug and a strain re=
lief attached to the Edirol case. I hope it holds up. If not, here is where=
 I am grateful for the reasonable quality of the R09's  built-in mics. They=
 don't do well in the wind but at least one can get some decent sound in a =
pinch. I do wish the batteries lasted a bit longer though.

I also have to say that it is great to be able to reach out from almost any=
where in the world and get some help from some of best informed and most he=
lpful people. Hooray for Naturerecordists.
