The R-09 has a history of problems with the 3.5mm jack used to connect
external mics. Early production runs did not properly support the
jack where it is soldered to the circuit board. The force of
inserting the 3.5mm plug, and the weight of the mic cable hanging from
the jack, tend to break the solder joint, resulting in a loss of signal.
There's a lengthy discussion (about 140 messages) of the problem on
the Tapers Section forum at

The tiny soldering points for the 3.5mm jack on the circuit board make
field repair a risky business. The best solution is to return the
R-09 to Roland/Edirol for repair under warranty. In USA, the
turnaround time is about 2 weeks.
Failure of the 3.5mm jack in recorders that use it (like all minidisc
machines) is commonplace. However, most devices using the 3.5mm jack
will last for years before the problem surfaces. The R-09's failure
rate is unusually high, and failures can occur after only a couple of
hours' use.
One way to avoid problems with a 3.5mm jack is to use a right angle
cable end rather than a straight-in cable end. This reduces the
leverage of the cable on the jack.
Some people prefer to leave a short "pigtail" cable plugged into the
input at all times. This way the wear and tear of connecting and
disconnecting the mics happens to the pigtail rather than to the input
on the recorder.
The Felmicamps web pages illustrate both the right angle connector and
pigtail cable. Look here

The Sonic Studios web site has high quality right angle 3.5mm cables.
They are expensive, but they help avoid the problems described here.
