Set the recorder gain by the metering. Typically I'll set with 15dB
headroom for unexpected louder sounds, but that varies some depending on
my evaluation of the site. For digital recorders you never want the
level to reach the 0dB mark or the clipping will ruin the recording.
Note this is different from standard practice for analog recorders.

  Set the headphones to what will be your final listening volume. You
can adjust it slightly higher to check out details if need be. It's two
separate controls on the recorder for a reason.
