Dwight--

You should be able to get some good advice and direction with that info.

For $5k, I'd consider a SD 722 recorder and a pair of the tiny
Schoeps MK-2 omni mics http://www.schoeps.de/E-2004/omnis.html
mounted on headphones or shoulders. These mics could also be
transferred to small stereo rig for stand-work. Omnis are hard to
beat for reach and there are many mounting options. The drawback with
the MK-2's is they may give up on you earlier in damp, humid
conditions,.. but maybe not-- the stories vary. There are many
larger mic options but with this is one very low noise option you
could walk around with, mic hands-free and get great results. To
explore the small omni approach, you can start-off "low budget" with
a pair of Shure WL-183's.
http://www.uwm.edu/~type/audio-reports/Shure-WL183s/index.htm They
are 10 dB(A) noisier than the MK2's, which is substantial, but you'll
still hear a significant improvement over your MS957. These can be
wired to plug into your existing MD recorder.

Reference quality headphones are probably smart for reliable
monitoring. The Sony 7905, Sony 7902, Sony V-900, Sony V-600 and
Sennheiser HD-280 are popular though Beyer and AKG make very good
headphones too.

The two sound archives I regularly explore are Soundtransit and
FreeSound. Someday this list might have a co-op digital archive up
and going where we can place lots of material in safe keeping and
properly tagged and researchable on-line. Seems very logical to me.

Feel free to ask questions-- there are many very experienced
recordists on the list. Rob D.
