Rob thanks for the valuable info and questions that have served to open up =
my idea of what I want to achieve and allowed me to focus on specifics. Ill=
answer your questions as you posed them.

  >Of course, it helps to give us an idea of your budget.

I luckily have a reasonably deep pocket to dig into so I would like to en=
d up with a system that is fairly high quality, lightweight and durable.

>1. What is your preferred recording style(s)?

Portability is a high priority as i am in a fairly remote area and get ar=
ond here mostly on foot. Minimal mike handling would be a bonus although wo=
uld not always be essential.

>2. What is the scale of your favorite sound subject(s)?

I am very drawn to getting a wide, deep sound stage that reflects the tot=
ality of the audial experience in a particular setting. So far I have place=
d the mic in an environment and let the MD run for the duration of the disc=
. Ceating soundscapes in the editing software also appeals to me - I believ=
e that is what Bernie Krause does to a large extent? Which seems to need in=
dividual recordings of various elements of an environment which are later w=
orked together into a complete 'picture' in editing software
  .
>What is your ideal "final product?'

I would like to contribute to an archive of sorts - for natural as well a=
s human-made (are humans un-natural?) sounds. I believe there is such a dat=
abase associated with this mailing list? I would also like to share these r=
ecordings online and I suppose I would ultimately like to publish to audiop=
hiles but I imagine that would very much in a possible future...

Initially I just want to record, edit and then publish to interested part=
ies on the web.

  >What kind of monitoring equipment do you have now?

I am using headphones supplied with the MD recorder for now, nothing specia=
l. When I edit on the PC I am using a really cheapo pair of plug in speake=
rs that really only give me a basic ability to monitor the editing. If I wa=
nt to hear more detail then its on with the phones. At some stage I will ha=
ve my Marantz amp and Taurin speakers setup - they are still in storage awa=
iting the day i have built a comfortable enough house to set them up in... =
We are living in a pretty simple and rudmentary setting here still and sour=
ce our electricity from the sun via solar panels and 3 12v storage batterie=
s. Im using a true sine wave inverter when I need ac power.

  regards
  Dwight
