This was my thinking as well. At least in terms of the problem being the
ToC. Damage to that small file would result in the disc appearing blank
even though the data is intact. I'll have to give your workaround a go
and see if it works. I think if I pull all the batteries and only use
USB power it will have the same effect. I need to get some more discs
however to proceed.

Certainly the possibility of user error does exist with me and the
MinDisc interface. I find not only the navigation to be clumsy but the
tiny Lilliputian buttons to be a nightmare. I have a small hand and
fingers and every time I use the thing I am tempted to find a 3 year-old
child to push the buttons. However, I locked the disc immediately after
the recording. When I checked the recording I had the disc in the locked
position, which to my understanding means that no recording or data
change can occur. If that is not the case I'm at a loss as to why there
is the record lock.
I did find this place in the UK that seems to have some data recovery
methods for the MiniDisc.
