The HHb Portadisc uses it's buffer primarily for error avoidance in
recording. It's only secondary that it's also used as a prerecord
buffer. All minidiscs have a buffer to handle errors due to shock or
other causes.
Note that the SD hard disc buffer will do no good if the hard disc has a
permanent failure. It's that permanent failure that Sound Devices wants
you to try and avoid by periodically replacing the hard disc. I'm pretty
sure there is going to be a record buffer on the hard disc, though if
that actually detects and corrects errors is not clear. Error checking
is a normal function for hard disks.
