Could SD possibly be using one of the more "ruggedized" HD's for their
7xx series? I'm not sure who makes them, but I've been researching a
new Navigation unit for my car and the one I'm interested in (Pioneer
Z1) uses an internal HD to store all the mapping info. The online
group I've been reading (http://avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3D728)
is already hard at work hacking these HD's and they have reported that
the drive that Pioneer is using is a variant on the standard notebook
HD and is reported to be more resistant to shocks and vibration as
these units would be in constant "shake mode" in a car or truck.
Here's a quote from their FAQ:
Q: What hard drive is in the Z1?
A: The drive in the Z1 is a Toshiba MK3029GACE. This is an automotive
quality drive and is little more than a laptop drive enhanced to
handle the additional shock of being installed in a moving vehicle.
This is from the Toshiba Website:
The MK3029GACE can withstand operational shock of 200g and
non-operational shock of 800g, providing a rugged and dependable
option for cars and SUVs as they travel through extreme temperatures
and terrains across the globe. The MK3029GACE is ATA-6 compliant,
supporting high transfer rates of up to 100 megabytes per second.

Anybody familiar with these drives?
