I've read through most of Rob Danielson's fantastically informative
and detailed material on HiMD recorders here:
http://www.uwm.edu/~type/audio-art-tech-gallery/index.html
I already own several "old style" regular MD recorders including my
trusty portadisc (HHB MDP-500) but the performance of the HiMD unit
looks very tempting. I have a few questions for the experts here:
1) How does the mechanically generated acoustic noise from the HiMD
units compare with older MD devices? For example, my Sharp MD-DR7-A
pocket MD recorder spins up the disc every 30 seconds or so when
recording (it uses a solid-state buffer to save battery life, I guess)
and during this time the motor and head mechanism make a small but
audible noise in a quiet environment.
2) Are all HiMD units with mic inputs equivalent for noise performance?
Rob's tests refer to the MZ-NH900 which seems to be discontinued. Does
the MZ-RH10 or MZ-RH910 have the same preamp? I see the MZ-RH1 claims
a mic input but it seems not to be available yet.
