Hi Gerry & Ed--

I also was able to get normal playback (without
the waivering lower mid tone that seems to stem
from the bees?) by working from Dana's original
.wav file.

It could be that the cause was double M-S
encoding as Dana speculated. I've also heard
digital noise reduction plugs like Sound Soap
create a similar effect. In any case, I'm
doubtful that the waivering/companded effect was
the result entirely of the mp3 encoding, which, I
believe was at 128 kbs.

I'm okay with people using 192-320 kbs MP3's--
even better if there's a uncompressed.wav or .aif
download option too.

It would be an asset if we had a couple of GB's
of host space to upload snippets to-- especially
because people use our archives and a great
majority of our links die. I hesitate to upload
meaningless fragments to Prelinger and similar
archives. We might be able to make 2 GB last a
long time with a policy of deleting files over
4mb? every 12 months. We could also selectively
retain >4mb files that get sustained use. Rob D.
