Dana,
The WAV file sounds much better than the mp3. It's a pretty good
recording. This reminds me of why I almost never use mp3 encoding.
I still don't hear much of the hiss you are worried about. But my son
does. I think that's due to the relative ages of our ears. I took a
quick look with a spectral analyzer and found an unusual amount of
energy above 15 kHz. Combining that information with the one annoying
sound I heard (the constant drone of insects) makes me think that there
were a lot of insects in the area and they are making a lot of high
frequency noise. That makes me think that gentle use of a low pass
filter might improve things a bit.
Now I can also hear the rumble. Although it's not as annoying (to me)
as the drone of the insects, a high pass filter does reduce it a bit
and seems to clarify the rest of the sounds.
Unfortunately, I don't know of anything that will remove the constant
insect noise without harming other sounds. So let's just be purists and
say that it's a part of what was there in Nature. OTOH I would be
inclined to edit out the motorcycle noise at the end.
