In a comparison with the Aachen Head ($24,000), we took two Sony
ECM55Bs (lavalieres) at $350 each, tied a string around a tree the
same distance as the diameter between one's ears, attached the mics
on opposite sides, and voila! No muss. No fuss. Fine binaural result
where the owner of the Aachen (who swore by it, BTW), was unable to
tell the difference when we played back recordings made both ways
from the same site. While the Aachen failed both wind and rain tests,
the ECMs were used in pretty much all rainforest weather conditions
without fail or noise problems.
