Thanks for all the suggestions.  The particular laptop model I have does =

not have a stereo 'line-in' connection, and the microphone seems to only =

be mono (regardless of settings).  The brief research I did on the=20
internet seemed to indicate that I was not the only one who had this kind =

of experience with the built-incapabilities of this laptop (Dell Inspiron =

6000; a pretty decent machine for the price, I think, but not ready for =

significant recording out of the box).

I have placed an order for the M-Audio Transit and should have it to try =

next week.
