Sometimes the earliest arrival is itself also a reflection, so
it's not necessarily the closest. In a flat open area, of
course, this wouldn't be a problem.

Imagine locating gunshots in a city -- all arrivals are
reflections, except in rare cases. And some reflecting surfaces
are more attenuating than others, so you can't use amplitude
either. Some cities are using pole-mounted mics for gunshot
location, and it can get very complicated.

Why is multipath a problem? Don't you just take the earliest
arrival time?
