After 24 years at the Oakland Museum of California as the curator of
the California Library of Natural Sounds (CLNS), Paul Matzner is
announcing his retirement. He is honored to have been present during
the early years of what has become a new profession of sound design,
particularly in the area of nature sounds. His career has spanned
the bridge between the world of analog and the world of digital
recording and computer facilitated sound mixes and designs. His
greatest pride has been to facilitate appreciation of nature sounds
in a world where visual images bombard us. Among the innovative
projects he created were sound designs throughout the Natural Science
Gallery that represented biologically accurate ecological
communities as well as exhibits in both the history and art
departments. In 1983 he co-founded of the Nature Sounds Society (NSS
or the Society) and was for many years the chairman and guiding light
of the organization and remains active as a Board associate
to this day. The creative synergy between NSS and the CLNS is one of
Paul's great accomplishments.=20=20=20

Through the efforts of Paul and other members, NSS has brought
together many talented people in the areas of science and the arts.=20
NSS has been a catalyst for individuals who use nature sounds for
their creative projects and expressions. The Society continues with
many of its original goals: learning to record nature sounds with
many new and emerging techniques, educating members about sound and
natural quiet, and participating in the campaign to restore,
preserve, and protect natural quiet. The result of Paul's work has
been to create an unprecedented community of nature sound recordists,
users and lovers that spans the world.=20

Paul's retirement will not be the end of his involvements with the
Museum, NSS, or nature sounds, but an opportunity to explore, listen
and expand into new endeavors in this arena.

Paul welcomes contact from old friends, new friends and as yet
unknown friends; the Museum and NSS cordially invites you to attend
this event to celebrate his achievements.
