Fwiw,
I've loved my Maggies as a pair of stereo speakers -- their
well-documented limitations aside ~ lack of < 100 HZ bass response,
finicky placement requirements, space requirements -- they like to be
at least a couple feet from any wall -- and small "sweet spot." But I
use them intentionally as a contrasting reference against mixes done
on my monitors (Mackies).
They are seductive and velvety and shine on well-recorded small jazz
combos; they do indeed give a nice soundfield to field recorded
material. But I always find them more impressionist and "foggy" than
my monitors. Not an unflattering effect, but not representative of
what I expect to hear in most contexts. I believe much of this might
be traceable to the fact that they radiate as much sound out the back
as the front, sticking your head between them arrayed parallel can
give my binaural-esque omni recordings a quite immersive feel.
In short I like listening to them -- but wouldn't mix on them. :)
Fwiw when I have room and cash to burn I'll probably upgrade to the
1.6s or even the 3.6s.
Btw I think the offer of $500-odd delivered is a great deal for the
quality you get -- in the home stereo world. Incidentally to my
surprise the best amp I've heard paired with them was an old tube ST70
-- the "received wisdom" was that their sound would be better
complimented with a crisp edgy amp.
best,
aaron
