If you're pleased with the sound that Magnepans create and your end
products will remain in-house (or you don't mind dragging your
speakers along to play your work in other places), I see no problem
with them. They seem to have less "punch" than traditional speakers
and the more diffuse field they create is very seductive with
spatial material to me. But, one can also mix an ambience track
using a $20 pair of headphones and it can sound wonderfully
transparent on the same headphones. Of course, another important
application of speakers is to help one make sound products that
reproduce well on the wide range of transducers people use. The
standard practice is to use reference monitors with a proven track
record of doing this and the list of widely accepted reference
monitor speakers is not that long. Most will have a pair of Genelecs
or Mackies, for example, and most will use 2 or 3 sets of speakers
for comparing results (in addition to a "real world" [bad] system or
two). Has anyone come across a pair of Magnepans being used for
reference monitoring? I ran the sting, ""mixed on magnepan" through
Google and got no matches. I'd guess that Magnepans might not be the
best choice if one is planning to spend that much money and end up
with one set of speakers. I thoroughly agree with Rich that the end
of the recording chain is another wise place to spend extra money, if
you have it. Rob D.
