Sony HiMD mic inputs are made for unbalanced input signals. The Rolls
PB224 supplies power for balanced, condenser mics like the NT1-A.
The mic outputs of Rolls Phantom Power Supplies are balanced but
balanced mic circuits can be easily changed into "unbalanced" signals
by connecting one of the (two) hot leads in both circuits to the
shield. In this case, pin#3 is connected to pin #1 inside of both XLR
connectors of the adapter cable.
There are balanced and unbalanced wiring standards. Most "better"
mics use balanced circuits because they less subject to radio
frequency interference and signal loss with distance. I have not
experienced problems with the short-run, unbalanced adapter cable
between the Rolls and HiMD recorder, nor have I heard reports of this
so far. Rob D.
