A similar gadget is available from Felmicamps
http://www.felmicamps.co.uk/products/micbooster.html
Maycom also markets a preamp in the form of an XLR
cable connector: http://www.maycom.nl/RK.html=20
The MicTube provides up to +55dB of gain, enough so you
can use the line in port rather than mic input. This
allows you to bypass the noisy mic pre-amp of inexpensive
flash memory recorders. The MicTube is powered by its
own AAA battery rather than the recorder's phantom power
circuit.
Maycom, a Dutch company, is represented in USA by
Bradley Broadcast and Pro Audio. Bradley is not
interested in importing the MicTube, unfortunately,
so I guess you'll have to look to an international
shop such as Solid State Sound in the UK
